Gathering the essential beekeeper supplies can take a while and can involve a little cash outlay but mostly it is a one-off investment. You need the hives of course, then bee colonies will also have to be purchased to reside in their new home. Protective clothing is highly recommended as are bee feeders and smokers. Honey extractors are also beneficial. Each has its own purpose in beekeeping.
When purchasing colonies of bees, try to purchase from a local beekeeper with a good reputation. It is recommended that you buy two colonies together. If one weakens, you can move some of the stronger bees to the weaker colony to help it improve. When choosing bees, look for calm insects and be sure there are sufficient numbers to fill the spaces between the combs. Inspect the queen bee and be sure to look for signs of honey bee pests, mites or diseases.
Protective clothing is worn by almost every beekeeper and should be at the top of your list when purchasing beekeeper supplies. Most beekeepers, even experienced ones will don a veil when working with the insects. This is to protect the face and neck. The gloves may be left off by those who have worked with bees extensively, but novice beekeepers wear a hooded suit or hat and veil along with gloves.
Many feeders are available on the market today. All follow a similar design in that they provide liquid for your bees while keeping intruders out. Ensure that the feeder is large enough for your colony and take precautions so your bees do not drown in the liquid. This may be as simple as placing a mesh barrier over the liquid so bees can get food, but not immerse themselves in it.
Bee smokers are essential when attempting to calm bees. If you wish to open the hive, a smoker can be very beneficial. The smoke produced by this equipment prevents bees from recognizing pheromones released by guard bees or those injured when the beekeeper opens the hive. Smoke also triggers an instinct to eat in preparation of leaving the hive as a result of fire. An abdomen full of food inhibits the bee's ability to sting.
Honey extractors are devices needed to retrieve honey from within a hive. This machine will remove honey from the hive without destroying it. There are many types to choose from so find one that meets your particular needs. Beekeeping can be quite involved, but you will love the rewards.
